stretch of southern Negros was created. Fr. Jose Barredo was the first parish

                                             priest, 1796-1835.

1857                                    Dauin was ceded to the Recollect Province which assigned Fr. Manuel  Navarro

as parish priest until his death in 1864.

1898                                    The Recollects were forced to vacate the parish due to the Revolution. A secular

1912                                    Return of the Recollects

1969                                    Cession of the parish to the secular clergy. Fr. Leandro Palacios was the last

Recollect parish priest, 1964-69. (Today, the parish of Dauin under the patronage

of St. Nicholas of Tolentine covers 23 barangays, one of which is Apo Island, around

30 minutes by motorized outrigger from Malatapay port in Zamboangita town.)

1982                                    A volcanic island and home to around 150 families, Apo Island became a marine

sanctuary through the initiative of Silliman University Marine and Biology Department.

14 December 2008            Bishop John Du offered the chaplaincy to the Recollects. It now forms part of the

Written by Administrator

Historical Background

19 May 1852                Became an independent town, originally a barrio known as Ermita (“a place of retreat”),

with Fr. Antonio Ubeda—who was instrumental to naming the town Nueva Valencia after

his hometown’s name in Spain—as the first Recollect to take care of the faithful’s

                                       spiritual needs.

31 March 1854             Established as a parish separate from Dumaguete and dedicated to Our Lady

                                       of the Abandoned

May 1855                      Fr. Tomás Mezquita, first parish priest assumed office. He built a church and a school,

parish; a secular priest from Dumaguete took over.

1904                             The Recollects resumed their pastoral care of the parish. They built a new concrete

                                      church and convent.

June 1621                     Establishment of a Recollect convent in Cebu upon the request of

Bishop Pedro de Arce. Located outside the walls of the city, it had a

chapel (hermitage) dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

more spacious and modern church that could accommodate 1,200 faithful.

March 18, 1966             Consecration of the church by Julio Cardinal Rosales.

January 1, 1971            Canonical erection of the parish by Cardinal Rosales under the patronage of Our Lady

of Mt. Carmel since the church was the center of Marian devotion under this title.
